Internships Available for Spring 2009 & Summer 2009

The Center for Adolescent Health & the Law is accepting internship applications for Spring 2009 and Summer 2009. Applications are welcome from law students and graduate students in public health and public policy or a related field. Interns will be supervised by Abigail English, a lawyer with more than 25 years of experience in the legal rights of children and adolescents.

The Center for Adolescent Health & the Law is a national nonprofit legal and policy organization that promotes the health of adolescents and their access to comprehensive health care. The Center conducts research, analyzes legal and policy issues, prepares publications, provides training and technical assistance, and engages in advocacy. The Center's work focuses on two broad substantive areas: consent and confidentiality; and financial access to care. The Center's work emphasizes the needs of vulnerable populations of adolescents.

Projects: The Center's current major projects are focused in the following areas:

  • Immunizations for adolescents, including the new HPV vaccine

  • Health care for homeless youth, former foster youth, and other disconnected youth

  • HIV prevention, diagnostic, and treatment services for vulnerable adolescents

  • Consent for health services for adolescents

  • Confidentiality protections in health services for adolescents

  • Participation of adolescents in biomedical and behavioral research studies

Activities: Interns will assist the Center with one or more of the following activities:

  • Legal and policy research and analysis of issues related to Medicaid, the State Children's Health Insurance Program, publicly funded health care safety net programs, state minor consent laws, the HIPAA Privacy Rule, and other confidentiality laws and policies.

  • Development of written memoranda, fact sheets, policy issue briefs, and other written materials designed to reach a broad range of audiences including advocates, policy makers, researchers, health care providers, and other youth-serving professionals

Application Procedures: Students who are interested in applying for an internship for Spring 2009 and Summer 2009 should submit the following information:

  • Cover Letter indicating the time period for which they are applying
  • Resume
  • Contact information for three references
  • Brief writing sample

The Center is also able to offer work-study positions for eligible students, and is happy to work with students to secure funding from their school or other funding sources to secure financial support.

The Center is an equal opportunity employer.
